Cardiovascular disease

What is cardiovascular disease?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. It is an umbrella term that encompasses diseases impacting the circulatory system, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, congenital heart defects, and more.

CVD develops when plaque builds up inside the arteries, hardening and narrowing them in a process called atherosclerosis. This can reduce or block blood flow, which increases the risk of blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. Major risk factors for CVD include high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption. Heredity and age can also play a role.

Some of the most common types of CVD include:

Managing CVD typically involves a combination of lifestyle changes and medications. For example, making healthy choices around diet, exercise, and avoiding smoking can lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Medications like beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, or statins tihn blood vessels or reduce strain on the heart. In severe cases, procedures like bypass surgery or angioplasty may be performed.

The earlier CVD is caught, the better one's chance of preventing complications like heart attacks.
